British Gas Business Football League - Premier Division – Saturday, 27th December 2008

Evesham United 0 Halesowen Town 0

Halesowen had to settle for only their second league draw of the season in a holiday stalemate at Evesham’s temporary St George’s Lane home.

The Yeltz went into the game with their two Portuguese stars Nuno Barreto and Ruben Gouveia still abroad and could therefore only name three substitutes. In an open start, Mark Danks forced a first minute corner and then fired over the bar from 20-yards after he was touched the ball from Darren Caskey’s 11th minute free-kick. Visiting goalkeeper Danny Ireland proved a solid, safe pair of hands all afternoon and made a good 22nd minute save at the foot of his post to keep out Troy Wood with captain Steve Lutz heading the resulting corner into the side-netting.

Justin Rowe was unable to take advantage of former Yeltz goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan’s poor clearance in the 24th minute and Vaughan then blocked Rowe’s 30th minute effort after Aaron Cornwall played the ball into the area. Ireland dived down smartly to save at Wood’s feet in the 32nd minute and easily collected a long range effort from Mark Hands a minute later. A 42nd minute Yeltz break saw Caskey spray the ball out to Danks, but he was brought down with Caskey hitting the resulting free-kick well wide of the mark. Seconds before the interval, Jay Denny steered a good chance wide after Cornwall beat his man to cross from the left.

Wood was blocked by Yeltz defender Gavin Hoyte at the start of the second half and Lutz hit over the bar from Simon Fitter’s corner. However, it was Halesowen who enjoyed a good spell of pressure in the first 20 minutes of the second half and the best opportunity to date fell on 53 minutes when Dean Smith played the ball out of defence to Cornwall on the opposite wing and his cross found Danks just six yards from goal, but his weak effort was turned away for a corner. The Yeltz forced three more corners in the next ten minutes with Vaughan saving low down when Michael Briscoe shot through a crowded goalmouth following Caskey’s 67th minute corner. Kevin Slack marked his Evesham debut by striking an effort onto the roof of the net in the 75th minute before Halesowen earned another two corners in the 77th minute.

The Robins then created several chances to win the game in the final ten minutes. Ireland saved Hayden’s 83rd minute dipping shot and Hayden fired just wide again two minutes later. Substitute Danny Lennon nodded wide in space at the far post from an 87th minute cross from the left but it was a case of Slack finishing as the centre-forward missed the best chance when he dragged an 88th minute half volley wide from the edge of the six yard box with the goal at his mercy.

But Halesowen almost snatched all three points with the final kick of the game when Vaughan failed to hold onto Rowe’s shot and Danks had more time than he realised but was unable to turn the rebound home.
