British Gas Business Football League - Premier Division – Saturday, 10th January 2009

Halesowen Town 2 Bashley 0

Halesowen took full advantage of being the only Southern League fixture to beat the freeze by moving back up to second spot in the table.

The Yeltz dominated Bashley for long spells but had to wait for a glorious last minute strike from Jay Denny to wrap up the points after Mark Danks gave them an early lead. But Halesowen faced an anxious last twenty minutes after being reduced to ten men by the needless sending off of Aaron Cornwall.

Dennis Pearce made his return to the Grove at centre-half and manager Morell Maison praised groundsman Ian Hipkiss for again working wonders to prepare an immaculate surface and defy the freezing weather. “He has allowed us to play the type of football we want – it was like a table top out there”. The woodwork kept Bashley in the game and Maison also highlighted “their keeper pulled off some wonderful saves but Jay Denny’s winner was superb and Justin Rowe was a real handful up front.”

Halesowen started well against one of last season’s play-off participants with Ruben Gouveia’s stooping header striking the cross bar in the 2nd minute from Cornwall’s cross. Gary Middleton then poked past the post as Bashley earned a 3rd minute corner.

Hard-working Justin Rowe (who was awarded the Non-League Paper Man of the Match) had a 9th minute shout for a penalty waved away when he appeared to have his legs clipped by goalkeeper David Elm racing out of goal. Elm then saved from Gouveia before Justin Rowe and Mark Danks lined up to see shots blocked in the 14th minute.

Halesowen took an 18th minute lead when DANKS rose to meet Nuno Barreto’s cross with a looping header into the roof of the net. Danks then chipped in a cross from the right but Justin Rowe fluffed his chance in front of goal.

Bashley created few chances all afternoon but Charlie Knight nodded over the bar in the 26th minute. Michael Briscoe made a timely interception on the half-hour and Alex Cowley helped the ball away for a corner two minutes later after James Rowe combined with Chris Knowles.

Elm’s best of a string of fine saves came on 37 minutes when he turned Gouveia’s excellent 25-yard strike onto the post after Justin Rowe did well again to set up the Portuguese star. Cornwall managed to turn the rebound back into the area but Gouveia flicked over the bar. Just before the interval Elm held onto another Gouveia snapshot low down.

The Yeltz continued to make all the running in the second half with Denny firing high in the 47th minute and Cowley’s 53rd minute wide-angled shot flew just wide of the far post. Unlucky Justin Rowe struck just over the bar on 58 minutes and Lee Canoville headed Cornwall’s cross over the bar five minutes later. Gouveia then managed to get in front of Elm in the 64th minute but his header was hooked off the line by Knight. Elm made yet another save to deny Justin Rowe who side-stepped his defender to shoot from 15 yards in the 70th minute. Only Chris Knowles troubled Nick Bussey with a long range effort straight at the home goalkeeper.

But Bashley were given late hope when Cornwall was dismissed with a straight red card for kicking out after a tussle with Bashley captain Paul Gazzard off the ball in the 71st minute. However, there was little change in play as Denny set up Barreto to chip against the Bashley bar again in the 77th minute.

However, Halesowen finally notched their deserved second goal when DENNY’s fine 20-yard effort curled over Elm to nestle in the top corner in the 89th minute.
