GX Southern League Cup 3rd Round – Tuesday, 13th January 2009

Halesowen Town 0 Atherstone Town 2

Halesowen were dumped out of a cup competition by a 2-0 scoreline against lower-league Atherstone for the second time this season.

The visitors made a lively start in the last sixteen of the GX Cup in an attempt to repeat their earlier success over Halesowen in the Birmingham Senior Cup and in the 5th minute Jamie Hood shot at Nick Bussey. The Adders took the lead in the 14th minute when Kyle Storer’s corner was met with a back header from Lee Greenway and Bussey fumbled as the ball struck the base of the post with Danny GAUNT quickly on hand to turn the ball home.

Atherstone continued to force a string of corners pulling Halesowen apart in one-way traffic and went 2-0 ahead in the 29th minute when Storer threaded the ball from midfield to put Luke BARLONE all alone to easily slot past Bussey. Halesowen only managed one effort in the first half with an overhead acrobatic effort from Mark Danks in the 20th minute.

Bussey went on to make two good saves by pushing away Storer’s 33rd minute free-kick and then making a good save from Gaunt two minutes later. On the stroke of half-time, Danny Campbell’s right wing cross was pushed away from the feet of Danny Weston by the fingertips of visiting goalkeeper Richard Williams.

The Yeltz made a triple substitution at the interval and enjoyed a better second half but without ever really threatening to find a way back into the tie. Darren Caskey’s 50th minute cross was tipped over the bar by Williams and Danks forced a corner four minutes later. On 63 minutes substitutes Ruben Gouveia and Aaron Cornwall combined to set up Jay Denny but his shot was blocked in front of goal. Caskey then curled a 64th minute free-kick past the post. The second-half became a physical affair with a series of yellow cards dished out by the referee. By the time Danks’s 86th minute effort went wide from 25 yards Halesowen were already well out of the League Cup for this season.
