British Gas Business Football League - Premier Division – Monday, 16th March 2009

Cambridge City 3 Halesowen Town 0

Halesowen’s play-off aspirations were dented as a comfortable Cambridge victory allowed them to leapfrog over the Yeltz into third place in the table.

With the Lilywhites still smarting from a surprise defeat at home to lowly Clevedon on Saturday, Halesowen found themselves under the cosh right from the off and the home side almost went in front virtually from the kick-off as goalkeeper Nick Bussey watched Craig Radcliffe’s shot go narrowly wide.

The Yeltz struggled to find their rhythm and it was no surprise when they fell behind in the 9th minute with Michael FREW free on the edge of the box with time to pick his spot. The visitors had to wait fully a quarter of an hour for a worthwhile effort on target after Paul O’Brien won a midfield battle and unleashed a 20-yard shot that was comfortably taken by Cambridge goalkeeper Zac Barratt.

The Yeltz were forced into an early substitution after 23 minutes when Patrick Duval came on to replace Gary Choi after he tweaked a hamstring. Although the home side had the upper hand, Halesowen should have been level after half an hour, but Damion Hamilton’s close range header was deflected over the bar.

Manager Morell Maison was in reflective mood at the break and he had more to ponder within five minutes of the restart when Hamilton’s attempted clearance fell to Steve GENTLE and he had the simple task of placing the ball into the corner of the net to make it 2-0.

A lack-lustre second-half from Halesowen continued and it was no shock when a third goal followed after 65 minutes when the visiting defence was carved open again for GENTLE to claim his second goal.
Although Yeltz heads were down, the goal difference did not suffer any further, but the night was summed up when Hamilton limped off five minutes from time and time was played out with only ten men as all their three substitutes had already been used.
