Zamaretto Football League Premier Division – Wednesday, 26th August 2009

Halesowen Town 1 Cambridge City 1

Halesowen ended second-placed Cambridge’s 100% start to the season to share the points in an even contest.

The ongoing boycott by home fans created another eerie atmosphere and the game only proceeded when the referee ordered the white lines to be marked out by makeshift staff after considering the pitch to be unplayable.

Early on, Nick Bussey collected a 9th minute right wing cross and opposite goalkeeper Zac Barrett gathered Tom Bates’ 10th minute cross. Stephan Morley then hit a long range effort over the Cambridge bar and Stephen Smith struck a low 16th minute drive at home goalkeeper Bussey. Stefan Moore went close in the 19th minute after meeting a good through ball with a flick at Barrett.

But Cambridge gradually gained the edge with Steve Gentle just failing to connect cleanly with Ashley Fuller’s 21st minute cross. FULLER then put the Lilywhites ahead by unleashing a bullet drive from 22 yards to beat Bussey into the top corner after advancing down the left.

The Yeltz soon equalised when Moore’s legs were clipped as he rounded goalkeeper Barrett and MOORE stepped up to slot home the resulting penalty and register his third goal of the season.

Before the interval, Cambridge’s Robbie Nightingale flashed a shot wide and Halesowen’s Stephen Cooke volleyed just wide after Barrett punched a corner clear.

Cambridge made a double substitution early in the second half but had to keep out two quick-fire Halesowen corners. Lee Chaffey then glanced his header just over the bar after Adrian Cambridge swung over a 66th minute left wing free-kick for the visitors.

With both sides seeking a late winner, Moore’s 68th minute shot was blocked by goalkeeper Barrett who then collected the resulting corner. Home substitute Paul O’Brien put Moore through in the 84th minute but he was again blocked by a good challenge from Matt Haniver.

With four minutes remaining, substitute Matt Dodds headed back across goal for Moore to nod agonisingly wide in the third of a series of consecutive corners delivered by Scott Rickards. In the final minute Bussey palmed away Neil Midgley’s shot on the turn and his Halesowen defence held firm when Adrian Cambridge sent in an injury-time free-kick and corner.
