Birmingham Senior Cup 1st Round - Wednesday, 23rd September 2009.

Halesowen Town 0 West Bromwich Albion 2

Two early goals were enough for West Bromwich Albion’s youngsters to see off trouble-torn Halesowen in the first round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

Lee Lynch latched onto a long pass out of defence but dragged his 3rd minute shot just wide as the visitors showed their extra pace and guile early on. A slip from home defender Henry Eze then allowed Ethan MANNION to lob over goalkeeper Nick Bussey to give Albion a 5th minute lead.

As Halesowen settled, David Blenkinsopp cut in from the right after ten minutes but goalkeeper Jordan Tebbutt beat the ball away before Bussey parried a shot from Saido Berahind at the other end. Eze headed a 20th minute deep free-kick back across the West Brom penalty area and Jamie Hood nodded Stephan Morley’s resulting corner over the bar.

The Baggies doubled their lead in the 24th minute with Liam O’NEIL heading home directly from Berahind’s free-kick.

Halesowen enjoyed plenty of play before the interval with goalkeeper Tebbutt beating clear after Eze and Hood combined with headers in the 25th minute and Ashley Lovell cleared his lines when Tebbutt’s clearance rebounded towards goal to earn one of several corners for the Yeltz. Just before the interval, Connolly cleared another effort from Blenkinsopp.

Halesowen were unable to find a way back in second-half although Tom Breward drove inches wide from 25 yards in the 48th minute. Blenkinsopp then beat two defenders before flashing a 55th minute shot wide. But the visitors avoided much further danger and comfortably played out time to progress to the next round in a game witnessed by the usual boycott-level of just over 100 fans.

Prospective owners Graham and Godfrey Ingram were observed in the Directors’ box, together with former manager Brendan Phillips. Observers also noted that off-field administration remained under the control of former director Kelly Gentles and the Grove PA system fell silent for the first time in over 20 years.
