Zamaretto Football League Premier Division – Saturday, 19th September 2009.

Farnborough 4 Halesowen Town 1

League leaders Farnborough continued to be Halesowen’s bogey side by inflicting a harsh 4-1 defeat in an open and entertaining game at Cherrywood Road, writes David Johnson.  The Yeltz have failed to win any of nine Southern League meetings with the Boro and the home side started in confident and expectant mood in Halesowen’s first game after finally entering into inevitable financial administration.

But Tom Breward revealed Halesowen’s fighting spirit by firing over the bar after James Johnson forced a 3rd minute corner. As the Boro found their stride, Nick Bussey went down smartly to save from lively Bradley Bubb after he was touched a free-kick from Daryl McMahon on the edge of the area in the 6th minute. Stefan Moore then delivered a good 10th minute cross into the home area.

Farnborough gained the lead in the 26th minute when a long clearance allowed Bubb to run on and square the ball for leading scorer Dean McDONALD to fire home when free in the penalty area. McDonald’s trickery then saw him poke just wide to earn a 33rd minute corner.

The home side doubled their lead after 37 minutes when James SMITH drilled home a low shot from the edge of the area after Gary Holloway’s shot was blocked.

Halesowen shrugged off another difficult week to deservedly pull a goal back in the 39th minute when Aaron Griffiths delivered an excellent left wing cross for MOORE to brilliantly head home his 10th goal of the season.

Immediately after the interval, Griffiths then broke from midfield to fire a 25-yard drive just past the post and his 56th minute cross was turned away for a corner as the visitors continued to compete well. The home side broke away a minute later with Bubb cutting in to drag his shot inches wide.

John Matkin made his Halesowen debut as part of a double substitution in the 62nd minute but it was Farnborough’s Kezie Ibe who flashed a chance along goal in the 65th minute.

The hosts finished strongly with a 25-yard free-kick touched to McMahon but his fierce drive was turned over the bar by Bussey after 70 minutes and James Smith placed a close range chance over the bar a minute later.

As the late pressure continued, Boro turned the screw with two further goals. Bubb’s clever back-heel played in McMAHON to crash the third Farnborough goal beyond Bussey from ten yards in the 79th minute. Halesowen then went close when Scott Rickards’ corner was flicked on by Moore and the ball just evaded Jamie Hood.

McDONALD made it a flattering 4-1 by firing home an 85th minute penalty after Bubb was brought down with Hood receiving a straight red card. Halesowen’s ten men continued to fight to the end with Rickards hitting a 90th minute free-kick over the bar and then firing just wide in injury time.
