Zamaretto League Premier Division – Saturday, 31st October 2009.

Merthyr Tydfil 0 Halesowen Town 2

Goal machine Stefan Moore notched two more goals as Halesowen ran out comfortable winners in the contest of the two teams in administration.

But Moore squandered a golden chance to put the Yeltz into an early lead when he uncharacteristically screwed wide in front of goal after controlling a ball from Henry Eze in the 3rd minute. The Martyrs created little in the first half on the long-grassed surface with Scott Armitage going closest when he headed back across goal from Cortez Belle’s 10th minute cross. Halesowen’s Tom Bates then struck a long range effort well wide after 27 minutes and David Blenkinsopp jinked past two defenders before rifling wide two minutes later with Halesowen on top.

MOORE gave Halesowen a deserved 35th minute lead by side-footing home a squared ball across the area from Blenkinsopp who collected a pass from his own half and worked himself goal side of the last defender before advancing to run clear on goal.

The Yeltz weathered some hefty challenges at the start of the second period before Simon Johnson forced home goalkeeper Andrew Delve to palm the ball away from his 57th minute free-kick.

MOORE then wrapped up victory when he doubled the lead in the 61st minute by lofting the ball over advancing goalkeeper Delve after latching onto a threaded pass from Simon Johnson.

In addition to being lively up front, the Yeltz defended well and soaked up the home pressure in the latter stages to maintain their run of clean sheets. Defender Andrew Thomas burst through from the left to drive past the Halesowen post in the 66th minute and Stefan Morley made an important clearance in front of goal from Kris Leek’s long throw two minutes later.

Nick Bussey made a fine double reaction save to deny Armitage in the 75th minute and Armitage found space in the visiting defence a minute later but he dragged his shot wide. Marcus Griffiths hit an 80th minute half-volley at Bussey and both Belle and substitute Matthew Trotman were unable to connect fully with an 84th minute free-kick from Steve Williams. In the final minute, Armitage could only head a rebound straight at Bussey after Bussey parried away Williams’ long range free-kick.

With the game entering stoppage time, Halesowen substitute James Johnson was sent off for a clumsy challenge in his second bookable offence since arriving on the pitch just 17 minutes earlier.
