Zamaretto League Premier Division – Saturday, 5th December 2009.

Bashley 1 Halesowen Town 2

Halesowen cemented their place in the top half of the table with an excellent three points at play-off contenders Bashley.  The Yeltz would be in second place were it not for their ten point deduction, and they scored twice in the early stages to continue their charge up the table before soaking up second half pressure with towering defender Liam Daly imposing at the back.

The visitors enjoyed the better of the first half, with Henry Eze heading over from a corner in the 3rd minute. Halesowen goalkeeper Chris Kiely marked his debut with a good save in the 10th minute by turning away a glancing header from Chris Knowles from Chris Ferrett’s free kick.

David BLENKINSOPP slipped the ball beyond goalkeeper David Elm into the corner of the net to give the Yeltz a 14th minute lead from a clever through ball by Stefan Moore.
In response Bash forced a series of corners, but Gary Middleton was then alert to clear after Blenkinsopp rounded Elm and the Bash keeper then made an excellent save to deny Moore after his solo run.

But Elm could do nothing to prevent the Yeltz doubling their lead after 26 minutes. Scott Rickards picked up possession from Joe Maxwell and found MOORE who confirmed his place at the top of the Premier Division scoring charts with a stunning strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area to register his 21st goal of the season.
Ferrett's set pieces posed problems for the visiting defence and Bashley then reduced the arrears before the interval. Adam Kelly was upended on a jinking run six minutes before half time and Dave ALLEN sent Kiely the wrong way from the penalty spot. Defender Daly flashed a header wide at the other end but only another fine stop from Kiely prevented Charlie Knight from levelling.
The hosts came out strongly after the break and Ferrett released Knight to beat two men and cut the ball back for Mark Gamble to shoot just wide in the 49th minute. Another Ferrett cross was then met by the stretching Gamble with Kelly coming in at the far post.

In end-to-end action, Moore proved to be a constant threat on the break and his excellent run ended with Elm clinging on to a low shot at the near post. Elm made a superb point blank save to deny Jay Denny from close range after an hour and then parried a long range strike from Danny Edwards. For Bashley, a driven free kick from substitute Justin Keeler was somehow scrambled to safety and Keeler produced a fine cross for Gamble to nod wide.
The Halesowen bench received a lecture from the referee before Moore again worked himself free but his cross was brilliantly cut out by Middleton to prevent Edwards from tapping home. Pete Castle and Kelly combined for Bash with eight minutes left and the latter found Keeler, only for Eze to make a crucial block. As the pressure intensified, Knight cut inside and curled a shot just over the bar.
Liam Daly proved to be a rock at the heart of Halesowen’s defence and he made two excellent clearances from late Bashley corners to preserve the lead. On the break Moore saw his shot deflected behind by Gazzard when a pass would surely have finished the game off.

Five minutes into injury time Bash’s last throw of the dice led to a goalmouth scramble with goalkeeper Elm joining all other Bash players in the area but the Yeltz defence held firm.
