Zamaretto League Premier Division – Saturday, 13th February 2010.

Halesowen Town 3 Truro City 2

Halesowen returned to winning ways with two goals from leading striker Stefan Moore extending the unbeaten league run to an incredible eighteen games in a five-goal thriller.  Truro left their first ever visit to The Grove empty handed in a 500-mile round trip as the Yeltz completed an impressive double, despite Andy Watkins twice reducing the deficit for the Cornish side.

Halesowen enjoyed the better of early exchanges with visiting goalkeeper Martin Rice flapping at a first minute corner earned by Danny Edwards. Moore then worked goal-side of Arran Pugh in the fifth minute but the towering defender recovered to clear. Rice was troubled again when he missed Stephan Morley’s straightforward 9th minute cross but Tony Thorpe looped a good heading opportunity over the bar. As Truro finally featured, home goalkeeper Nick Bussey collected Scott Walker’s free-kick from the edge of the area in the 12th minute before the hosts were back on the attack when Morley floated a 16th minute corner for Liam Daly to plant a free header over the bar.

The Yeltz deservedly grabbed the lead after 25 minutes when Moore latched onto a long ball but scuffed his chance and, as the ball ran along goal, THORPE was on hand to turn home his first Halesowen goal from close range.

With 34 minutes gone, Thorpe flicked on to put Moore free on goal for the third time in the first half, but he failed to make a clean strike again to screw well wide. Truro pressed just before the break with Walker’s 25-yard free-kick drifting past the post and Marvin Brown’s low shot saved well by Bussey near his post. At the start of the second period Aaron Brown then nodded just wide and Watkins fired inches high. For Halesowen, Moore lobbed just over the bar from the edge of the area in the 51st minute.

Moore found himself up against giant central defenders Arran Pugh and Aaron Brown but his first goals in seven games finally broke Halesowen’s frustrating sequence of draws.

MOORE returned to the goal-trail by clipping home from close range to double Halesowen’s lead in the 53rd minute after Morley played a long ball out of defence for Thorpe to deliver a fine cross from the right.

But Truro were given a way back into the game as they reduced the arrears just three minutes later when goal-poacher WATKINS was first to react and convert after the ball rebounded off the far post from Andy Taylor’s shot.

Resurgent MOORE re-established the two goal advantage in the 69th minute when he beat goalkeeper Rice to a long ball and headed over the stranded goalkeeper to leave himself the task of touching home his 24th goal of the season into an empty net.

However the lead was reduced yet again in the 74th minute when a long free-kick was only half cleared by the home defence and WATKINS smashed home the loose ball to set up a nervous finale for Halesowen.

An increasingly confident Moore played a delightful pass to substitute David Blenkinsopp in the 84th minute only for Rice to make a fine blocking save.

But it was goalkeeper Bussey who preserved the lead late on when he gratefully grabbed the ball from substitute Kye Tooze in the final minute of normal time. In the sixth minute of stoppage time Bussey’s then completed a superb double save to deny Watkins his hat-trick and Truro’s equaliser by first stopping from Watkins who was free down the right and then recovering to claw the ball away in a fine reflex save at the base of his post from Watkins’s second attempt.
