Zamaretto League Premier Division – Saturday, 21st August 2010

Evesham United 0 Halesowen Town 0

The first week of the new season ended with Halesowen remaining unbeaten after completing an unlikely hat-trick of goal-less draws. But once again Halesowen had goalkeeper Dean Coleman to thank for saving a penalty to keep their frugal defensive record intact.

Fazel Koriya picked up the ball after being tripped in the penalty area by Jamie Hood after only six minutes, but Coleman correctly dived to his left to keep out Koriya’s weakly struck spot-kick in an almost identical repeat of his penalty save from the previous Saturday. Grateful Halesowen responded when Lee Osborne struck a 13th minute cross into Evesham’s side-netting.

There was little further action in the first-half with Evesham’s neat approach play breaking down in the final third against the resolute Yeltz back-line. Seconds before the interval, Koriya’s corner was lost by Coleman with his defence easily tidying up and on the break Alex Johnson’s shot drifted wide of the home goal.

The goal drought continued in a much better second half with Lee Osborne’s shot blocked from Craig Connor’s 50th minute corner and Hood blasting the loose ball high over the bar. Dallas Moore then made a good saving tackle in the 57th minute after Jamie Hyde released Justin Nisbett into the penalty area. At the other end, Connor’s fierce 61st minute drive was blocked following a set piece near the bye-line.

Mid-way through the second half Neil Barnford’s deceptive looping header struck the top of Coleman’s bar and Evesham were awarded two dangerously positioned free-kicks on the edge of the area, but the Yeltz defensive wall did its job by keeping out both attempts.

After a couple of changes from the visitors, substitute Nathan Smith saw his 71st minute shot collected by Vaughan. However, Evesham continued to press forward in the latter stages with Coleman collecting from substitute Jermaine Clarke and lively midfielder Samuel Mensah sending a long lob over the bar. A rare slip from the otherwise solid Moore allowed Nisbett through on goal with fifteen minutes remaining but Coleman proved alert to make another fine save.

Halesowen’s final chance fell for Michael Nardiello but he fired at Vaughan from the left with ten minutes remaining, as the visitors drew another blank in front of goal.
