Worcestershire Senior Cup Quarter-Final – Tuesday, 25th January 2011

Halesowen Town 2 Stourport Swifts 1 (AET)

An extra time winner from Michael McGrath gave Halesowen a long awaited and confidence-boosting victory, despite being reduced to ten men.  The Zamaretto Division One South & West opposition, managed by former Yeltz player of the season Richard Colwell and assisted by another former Yeltz connection in Ross Collins, had earlier pulled level late in normal time from Marlon Walters’ early strike.

In the 3rd minute John Griffin robbed Gareth Davies but home goalkeeper Simon Flower gathered his shot low down at the second attempt. Halesowen then forced a corner when McGrath’s free-kick was helped on by Rory Curtis to Marlon Walters. The Yeltz took the lead in the 8th minute when the home defence failed to clear the corner and a wide-angled shot from WALTERS was deflected into the net.

Flower did well to preserve the lead just two minutes later by making a fine reflex save from Griffin’s close range header. A drive by Curtis from the edge of the area then brought a 13th minute save from Stourport keeper Paul Evans, the target of a recent Yeltz approach.

With Halesowen guilty of giving the ball away in midfield, there were few other chances until late in the first half when Evans saved after Curtis burst forward. The second-half also failed to live up to the early promise of the game with both sides struggling to create clear chances. As the Swifts tried to apply pressure, a penalty appeal for handball by McGrath from Dean Bromley’s free-kick was turned down after an hour and Griffin scuffed his shot in front of Halesowen’s goal in the 72nd minute.

But the Swifts grabbed an 80th minute equaliser when substitute Jamie INSELL reacted quickly to slot home a rebound after Flower parried Griffin’s shot to send the game into thirty minutes of extra time. Visiting captain Deme Whitall-Williams nodded just wide with two minutes remaining from a deep free-kick. Halesowen finished with a late flourish as the game entered injury time with Lee Chilton’s low shot tipped away for a corner by Evans and a long shot from substitute Sam Wills deflected wide.

Into extra-time, Flower held onto a 95th minute shot from Griffin before the game ignited with Chilton shown a straight red-card in the 102nd minute for dissent.

But the ten-man Yeltz regained the lead after 104 minutes when Michael McGRATH’s strike settled the tie and sent the home side into a semi-final clash against Worcester City.
