Zamaretto League Premier Division – Saturday, 5th February 2011

Halesowen Town 0 Evesham United 8

Hapless Halesowen were ripped apart in their worst ever Southern League result with David Accam’s quick-fire hat-trick helping Evesham to an eight goal trouncing as an already tortuous Yeltz season took a further turn for the worse.

Such a result may have been long feared, yet few suspected it would be inflicted by modest, mid-table Evesham who have spent most of their season struggling to find the net. After the game opened at a frenetic pace, the rout began when a mix-up between home goalkeeper Simon Flower and central defender Jemiah Richards allowed the ball to bounce through for Marcus PALMER to give Evesham an 18th minute lead. Palmer was then put free on goal six minutes later but was driven wide by Flower. When Palmer played the ball back across goal, Accam’s shot led to a denied penalty appeal for handball.

Struggling centre-back Emmanuel IBHADON turned Isaac Shaze’s cross beyond Flower into his own net for a 29th minute own-goal as the worst defeat of modern times took shape for a whole generation of Yeltz fans. SHAZE went one better by being alert enough to convert a rebound from ten yards after Accam was left free to drive towards goal to make it 3-0 in the 34th minute. A 38th minute effort from Accam then drifted just wide as the in-form visitors took full control.

With the floodgates open, ACCAM’s low shot from the edge of the area easily beat Flower to put Evesham four goals to the good in the 39th minute. SHAZE made it a shell-shockingly unbelievable 5-0 at half-time by playing a clever dummy to collect a ball from the left before rifling a low shot from 20-yards into the bottom corner for his second goal in the 45th minute. Seconds before the interval Flower made a good save to deny Palmer on the turn.

The officials may have feared the worst as they ordered repairs to the Halesowen goal-net prior to the second-half commencing and the game may have been already over, but there was no respite for the generally blameless, but out-of-their-depth Yeltz players, as the mauling continued.

ACCAM heaped on the misery by strolling clean through the home defence and completing a fine finish just two minutes into the second half to claim the sixth goal for Paul West’s Evesham. ACCAM then completed his twenty-minute hat-trick for the rampant, rocking Robins with a cracking bullet-like volley that almost burst the net to make it 7-0 in the 57th minute.

Evesham even afforded themselves the luxury of missing a penalty after an hour when Palmer’s spot-kick was saved low down at the post by Flower after Palmer had been brought down. The demoralised Yeltz finally mustered a couple of chances with Anthony Bruce just wide and Evesham keeper Nathan Vaughan making a good blocking save to deny Justin Nisbett in the 69th minute. Rory Curtis then lobbed just over the bar two minutes later.

But an eighth Evesham goal soon followed when Sam MENSAH made an intelligent run through the beleaguered home defence like a knife through butter to slot past Flower and leave humiliated Halesowen staring relegation full in the face.
