Zamaretto League Premier Division – Tuesday, 5th April 2011
Brackley Town 6 Halesowen Town 0
Improving Brackley gained full revenge for their 5-3 defeat at The Grove in December as Halesowen suffered another heavy defeat, writes David Johnson.
Halesowen’s agony began after just six minutes when a throw-in found Carl Palmer and his shot was turned home by Francis GREEN on his return from suspension. Tom WINTERS thumped past goalkeeper Louis Connor from the edge of the penalty area to double the lead in the 8th minute and a long-night loomed when Steve BASHAM crashed home a third goal with a 20-yard shot with just 13 minutes on the clock.
The Yeltz won their first corner after 14 minutes before central defender Chris Godwin hobbled off injured to be replaced by Emmanuel Ibhadon four minutes later. The Saints continued to dominate as Connor collected Basham’s 19th minute effort and Josh Skidmore turned the ball away from Winters for a 25th minute corner. Busy Connor then held on to Joe Magunda’s deep 26th minute cross.
Halesowen’s best chance of the game came after half an hour when Keenan Meakin-Richards was out of luck to see his direct curling 25-yard free-kick rebound off the crossbar with goalkeeper Jon Bond beaten. Just before the interval Connor did well to save at the feet of Winters as the main danger-man tried to round the ‘keeper.
Just as in the first half, Halesowen made a nightmare start to the second period and conceded another two quick-fire goals. The fourth goal came in surprising fashion when Connor flapped and dropped Owen STORY’s left-wing corner into his own net in the 47th minute. STORY added his second goal of the game to make it 5-0 just two minutes later by driving into the bottom corner from the right of the penalty area. Story then missed a great chance for a hat-trick when he blazed a rebound over the bar after Connor did well to parry Palmer’s 54th minute shot.
The remainder of the game fell flat and took on the feel of a friendly match with Connor doing well to cut out Winters’ cross after an hour and then saving Winters’ 20-yard free-kick in the 67th minute. Substitute Elliot Sandy fired into the side-netting in the 75th minute after Connor made a finger-tip save from Jamie Gould and Connor kept out another fierce near post drive from Gould two minutes later. Adam Jarrett blasted wide when free on the left in Halesowen’s only real attempt of the second half in the 78th minute.
WINTERS completed the 6-0 scoreline in the 80th minute by touching home a rebound after Connor saved Sandy’s shot.
