Zamaretto League Premier Division – Saturday, 23rd April 2011
Tiverton Town 0 Halesowen Town 0
The clash of the two basement teams ended in stalemate and only confirmed Halesowen will finish bottom of the league with Tiverton also condemned to relegation, writes David Johnson.  The hosts began the game desperate for a win in the hope of still avoiding the drop, but despite increasing urgency as the game progressed, Tiverton lacked any penetration in a poor home display. Indeed it was easy to see why Tiverton have also been in relegation trouble all season, with the game ending in a predictable deadlock as the two weakest attacks in the division locked horns.
In a first half of few chances, Tiverton’s Michael Nardiello volleyed Ryan Leonard’s deep cross wide at the far post against his former club before a neat move and cross from Halesowen’s Andrew Westwood earned the first of two corners delivered by Flavien Chambaud in the 18th minute. Both Ian Sampson and 39-year old player-manager Mark Saunders then hit long range efforts wide for the hosts.
Halesowen’s best chance of a dull first half saw home goalkeeper Ryan Draper palm the ball away after Mark Smith played the ball forward for Felix Kyremeh to skilfully cross from the right in the 23rd minute but the loose ball ran free. At the end of a first period more notable for the action in the Devon sky as the thunder rolled around the ground, home striker Jules Emati-Emati should’ve done better than put the ball over the net from just three yards after Yeltz goalkeeper Simon Flower juggled Alex Faux’s cross.
Five minutes into the second half Emati-Emati then flashed a header wide from a Saunders cross and Saunders then did well at the other end to clear off Kyremeh’s head following Westwood’s left-wing cross with Smith heading the resulting corner over the bar. As Tiverton still struggled to breakdown Halesowen’s defence, Sampson wasted a free-kick and Joe Bushin headed over the bar. For Halesowen, Kyremeh headed well over the bar from a 68th minute free-kick from Gareth Davies.
With Tiverton looking increasingly desperate pushing forward, Halesowen were able to exploit space on the break and created several late chances to snatch the game. Kevin Moncheu broke free in the 75th minute after a defensive error but fired straight at goalkeeper Draper. Davies then exchanged passes with Moncheu but Draper made a last-ditch block from Davies on the edge of the six-yard box.
Tiverton came close to finally claiming a vital goal when Leonard’s 82nd minute free-kick flew through a crowded goalmouth only to rebound off the far post with Flower beaten. In the game’s final flurry, Draper saved another effort low down from Davies before the Yeltz defiantly cleared a series of late crosses and corners. Leonard struck an 88th minute free-kick directly at Flower and as the game entered stoppage time a loud appeal for a home penalty for handball was turned down with just a corner given.
In the third minute of injury time, home goalkeeper Draper made a splendid save to deny Davies and substitute Emmanuel Ibhadon blasted the inviting rebound wide. The was still time for one last throw of the Tiverton dice as another Leonard shot was superbly tipped around the post by Flower and Alex Faux headed over the bar as Tivvy forced two more corners, but Halesowen held on for a well deserved point.
