Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West – Tuesday, 16th August 2011

Halesowen Town 1 North Leigh 0

Naveed Arshad finally broke the resistance of Oxfordshire village side North Leigh just minutes after his introduction as second-half substitute to help Halesowen to their first win of the season.

Earlier on, Halesowen had dominated but failed to unlock North Leigh’s defence. Justin Nisbett played the ball in for Lee Chilton to drag his 2nd minute shot wide and lively Chilton’s cross was pushed over the bar a minute later. In an eager start, Anthony Bruce’s 4th minute shot fell for Nisbett but he could only flick on towards goal weakly from a good position.

For the Millers, a cross from Mark Flanagan was collected by home goalkeeper Paul Evans in the 12th minute and seconds later Flanagan struck wide again.

But Halesowen continued to boss play without finding a final touch to gain the lead. Bruce’s 17th minute free-kick found Nathan Jackson free but his disappointingly weak header was cleared and Nisbett’s 25th minute shot was then beaten away by goalkeeper Sam Warrell with Chilton screwing the rebound wide. A free-kick from Gavin Saunders was headed on by both Jackson and Mark Smith to Nisbett near the goal-line, but the offside flag was raised. Just before half-time full-back Nathaniel Caines did well to clear off the boot of Andy McCabe in front of goal and Tom Franklin’s header was caught by Evans from the resulting corner delivered by substitute Michael Hopkins.

There were few chance at the start of the second half until substitute Arshad provided an alternative option and more life up front for the Yeltz. Arshad received a yellow card for an over-enthusiastic challenge after just two minutes on the pitch but then struck over the bar in the 66th minute from Nisbett’s pass.

ARSHAD grabbed the solitary winning goal with a superb low shot into the bottom corner from wide on the left in the 69th minute. A long range shot from Bruce was then touched onto the crossbar by Warrell after 75 minutes.

But North Leigh had their own chances to level with John Mills doing well to play the ball out for Flanagan to cross, only for Mills to plant a free header over the bar. Home defender Smith then cleared off the line in the 78th minute from Mills with Evans out of his goal.

With chances continuing to be created, Smith glanced a header wide from an 80th minute corner and Nisbett struck the side-netting from a wide angle. With four minutes remaining, Arshad almost added a second goal after collecting Chilton’s cross in front of goal but goalkeeper Warrell made a fine blocking save on the line. In the final minute, North Leigh substitute Hopkins put a cross well wide with his fellow strikers free in the centre.
