Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West – Tuesday, 23th August 2011

Yate Town 0 Halesowen Town 0

Halesowen were unable to find their goalscoring form of last weekend and had to settle for an away point at Yate Town.

Captain Gavin Saunders came closest to snatching victory for the Yeltz when his 77th minute shot from twenty yards was superbly clawed out from under the crossbar by home goalkeeper Josh Dempsey.

Naveed Arshad and Lee Chilton were both unavailable due to family reasons; injured Peter Folkes was replaced by Brendan Kelly and Jean-Michel Gueyes made his Halesowen debut.

Early on, visiting goalkeeper Paul Evans collected a low shot from Neikel Plummer and Tom Kington nodded wide for Yate from Michael Meaker’s corner. Plummer then headed just wide after 14 minutes. Nathan Jackson received a 14th minute yellow card and was then subject of further suspicion after an incident with Tom Kington in midfield just three minutes later. Evans was on hand to save well again in the 21st minute when Tyrone Mings – son of Chippenham manager Adie Mings – whipped in a free-kick from the edge of the penalty area.

Halesowen won their first corner of the game after 22 minutes following a neat spell of possession but the Bluebells cleared. Just before half-time Kelly struck a 25-yard free-kick over the bar and another free-kick from Aaron Lescott was collected under the crossbar by Dempsey. At the start of the second period Gueyes struck just wide and Andrew Westwood went close from a Nathaniel Caines cross.

Evans continued to command his goal and keep Halesowen’s clean sheet by saving Meaker’s 65th minute shot and then touching a curling effort from Jake Cox around the post in the 72nd minute after Anthony Bruce was dispossessed in midfield. Kington headed the resulting corner wide.

With neither side appearing likely to break the deadlock, Halesowen goalkeeper Evans did well to hold onto a header from home captain Ed Vahid from a deep 75th minute free-kick and Evans beat away Cox’s header at the far post in the dying moments.
