Red Insure League Cup 1st Round – Tuesday, 1st November 2011

Redditch United 1 Halesowen Town 0

Halesowen were beaten at the first stage of the Red Insure League Cup by a slender defeat at Premier Division Redditch United.

Redditch enjoyed the better of the few chances created in the first period after Lee Chilton saw his 5th minute shot turned around the post by home goalkeeper Dean Coleman. Jimmy Deabill scuffed a shot in front of the Yeltz goal in the 20th minute after Jamie Grimes skipped down the left flank to cross. Five minutes later Deabill met Aaron Stringfellow’s cross but Yeltz goalkeeper Paul Evans made a good full length save to push his header away for a corner. Connor Deards was then blocked in front of goal by Nathaniel Caines and another Stringfellow cross was cut out by Evans shortly before the interval.

Halesowen’s best spell came early in the second half and in the 50th minute Nathan Jackson turned to fire a speculative effort just wide from 25 yards. Half-time substitute Michael McGrath then played a delightful cross-field pass out to Jonathan Aldridge but his cross was cleared for a corner after an hour. Chilton advanced on goal from midfield five minutes later but could only shoot weakly at former Halesowen goalkeeper Coleman.

The Reds upped their game to claim the solitary 72nd minute winning goal when Joe HALSALL nodded home Stringfellow’s right wing cross from close range to register his debut goal. Halesowen threw on substitutes Naveed Arshad and Andrew Westwood and as the game finally opened up, Deabill volleyed over the Halesowen bar in the 82nd minute. McGrath then ballooned a 25-yard free-kick over the home bar three minutes later. With four minutes remaining Redditch went close again when substitute James Travis dragged the ball back for Deabill but his effort bounced up in the arms of Evans.
