Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West – Saturday, 31st December 2011

Halesowen Town 0 Mangotsfield United 1

Halesowen slipped to a disappointing narrow defeat in the early New Year’s Eve kick-off after late pressure failed to cancel out Mangotsfield’s second half penalty.  Anthony Bruce was unavailable and Stephen Jackson, who took part in pre-season preparations, took over the goalkeeping gloves with Paul Evans sidelined for a month and his intended replacement David Rimmer also unavailable.

The game started in lively fashion within a string of chances within the first quarter of an hour. Lee Chilton’s corner was headed off the line by Tom Knighton after just four minutes and Nathan Jones struck at goalkeeper Chris Astley in the 7th minute following more good work from Chilton.

Stephen Jackson showed no nervousness with a 9th minute save at the feet of Knighton from Geraint Bater’s through ball and Knighton’s dangerous 14th minute cross was then cleared by Chilton. But with Halesowen looking hungry to repeat their Boxing Day success, Justin Nisbett’s 15th minute low drive was cleared off the line by Lee Marshall.

The game quietened down late in the first half with fewer chances although Nisbett’s placed shot was easily saved by Astley following a dummy from Jones in the 26th minute. Mitchell Page then headed down and wide of the Halesowen post in the 29th minute and seconds before the break Sean Seavill drove wide for the visitors. At the start of the second period Mangotsfield forced two corners and Seavill hit a free-kick at goalkeeper Stephen Jackson.

Neil ARNDALE then slotted home the Mangos’ winner from the penalty spot in the 57th minute after Gareth Davies clattered Knighton following confusion between Mark Smith and his goalkeeper Stephen Jackson whilst under pressure from Knighton.

The Yeltz responded well but were unfortunate not to find an equaliser. Brendan Kelly went close at the far post from Michael McGrath’s 61st minute deep free-kick and a cross from Jones was cleared off the head of Naveed Arshad in front of goal two minutes later. Stephen Jackson then kept Halesowen in the game with a good reaction save at his post from Joe McClennan in the 71st minute.

But Halesowen created the clearer late chances and Chilton was unlucky to see his 25 yard curling shot strike the outside of the post in the 73rd minute. A poor free-kick from Kelly almost let in Mitchell Page for a breakaway Mangotsfield goal before Halesowen’s late onslaught again went unrewarded.

With 90 minutes on the clock, McGrath’s 25 yard free-kick rebounded off the inside of the post and Gary Colborne cleared substitute Jason Wood’s follow-up off the line. Deep in injury time Mangotsfield had another let off when a volley from substitute Gavin Saunders was nodded off the line by full-back Tom Parrinello following Chilton’s corner.
