Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West – Tuesday, 6th March 2012

Halesowen Town 2 Abingdon United 0

A goal apiece from strikers Ben Haseley and Naveed Arshad helped Halesowen extend their unbeaten run to five games in a re-arranged fixture.

Haseley caused danger straight from the start with a good 4th minute cross looking to find Arshad but Luke Carnell cleared. A minute later Marcus Jackson fed Haseley and he sidestepped two defenders to bring a save from visiting goalkeeper James Foster.

Chances were few for Abingdon although Danny Seawood was unlucky to see his 13th minute shot strike the post. Otherwise, Halesowen had the better of the first half with keeper Foster staying alert to take the ball off Haseley in the 16th minute. Six minutes later the roles reversed as Haseley was faster than Foster to the ball but was forced too wide to find the target.

HASELEY put Halesowen ahead in the 33rd minute by reacting smartly to nod home his sixth goal in eight games when Neil Barnfield’s blocked shot looped up in front of goal after Mark Smith had beaten two defenders. The Yeltz then forced two corners before Matthew Biddle netted for the U’s in the 41st minute from close range but was ruled offside. Sam Collier struck high over the Halesowen bar just before the interval.

At the start of the comfortable second half Richard Huckfield headed onto the bar from Michael McGrath’s 51st minute corner and Haseley’s 55th minute effort was then turned away for a corner. Collier went close for Abingdon after being set up by Biddle and in the 66th minute McGrath blasted a free-kick right on the edge of the area at the defensive wall. Marcus Jackson forced another corner three minutes later and Huckfield headed Marcus Jackson’s corner at Foster in 70th minute.

There was little sign of Abingdon being able to get back into game although Halesowen left it late to double the lead. Leading scorer ARSHAD was bundled over in the penalty area by Jack Smith in the 82nd minute and stepped up to beat Foster to wrap up the points by lofting a cheeky penalty into the roof of the net.
