Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West – Saturday, 10th March 2012
Tiverton Town 4 Halesowen Town 2
Former Halesowen striker Michael Nardiello completed a Tiverton hat-trick to end Halesowen’s run of improved form in a topsy-turvy six goal thriller.

In the 3rd minute of a balmy Tiverton afternoon, Gavin Saunders’ looping cross was pushed away by home goalkeeper Chris Wright. Halesowen stopper Paul Evans then marked his return from injury by collecting captain Paul Kendall’s header from Josh Concanen’s deep free-kick. But despite the decent start, the Yeltz crashed to be three goals behind within the first 25 minutes as a result of defensive hesitancy.
Jules EMATI-EMATI completed the simple task of rounding Evans to convert the first goal in the 11th minute after Nardiello’s flick-on failed to be cut out. Four minutes later leading scorer NARDIELLO took advantage of further indecision to confidently fire past Evans from 10 yards and double the lead. Danny Clay then volleyed over an open Halesowen goal from Nardiello’s 18th minute cross with Evans caught out of goal.
NARDIELLO stepped up to make it 3-0 by slotting home a 25th minute penalty after his legs were clipped in the area by Richard Huckfield. Nathaniel Caines crossed onto the roof of the Tivvy net but as the hosts threatened to run riot, Michael McGrath’s misguided midfield pass allowed Nardiello to set up Emati-Emati to balloon another good chance over the bar after 31 minutes. A 37th minute free-kick from Kevin Hill was then saved by Evans, although at the end of the first period Halesowen exerted a spell of pressure and Naveed Arshad blasted high over the bar. At the interval Caines limped out of the game with a hamstring injury.
The second half proved to be a different story as Halesowen made a stirring response. Marcus Jackson’s 51st minute cross was flicked by Ben Haseley to finally bring the first real save out of Wright. At the other end a slip from out-of-sorts Huckfield let in Emati-Emati but he sliced over the bar.
The inspired recovery began when Ben Haseley’s excellent work saw him beat goalkeeper Wright to the ball on the left side of the area and he pushed on to square the ball for JACKSON to tap home a 58th minute reply. Haseley then went agonisingly close by ghosting in with a glancing header from dangerous Jackson’s 64th minute cross but Wright reacted well to save. Huckfield then nodded a 65th minute corner just over the bar and Neil Barnfield’s clever back-heel rolled just past the post after Haseley forced a 71st minute corner.
HASELEY did even better with a sublime solo goal in 73rd minute when he beat his defender to a long ball chase and brilliantly cut inside before whipping the ball past Wright for a second Yeltz goal. Substitute Reece Cotterill’s 84th minute effort was then hacked clear as further Halesowen pressure just failed to bring a warranted equaliser. Rattled Tiverton central defenders Hill and Kendall both received yellow cards for fighting amongst themselves after 85 minutes in a sign of the Halesowen onslaught.
But the fightback ended when McGrath was dismissed with a straight red card for hitting out at substitute Josh Searle in the 89th minute and thereby add another entry into Halesowen’s red-card nightmare season. Tivvy punished the ten-man Yeltz and made it 4-2 in the second minute of added time when Searle cut the ball back for NARDIELLO to complete his hat-trick by side-footing home and end a compelling contest.
