Stourport Swifts 1 Halesowen Town 1

Halesowen shared the points with basement side Stourport after leading striker Ben Haseley’s fine early second-half goal was pegged back in a fair reflection of play in the early Bank Holiday kick-off.

Halesowen Defending vs Stourport Swifts

At the start of an even first period, Lewis Pountney held the ball up for lively Tim Jackson to fire over the Halesowen bar in the 10th minute. A minute later Halesowen youngster Akil Grier played a clever through ball that almost found Marcus Jackson in front of the Stourport goal. Haseley then hit weakly wide from the edge of the penalty area. For the hosts, Pountney twice headed just off target from Tim Jackson crosses before Rory Curtis received his first yellow card for a challenge on former Stourport goalkeeper Paul Evans in the 23rd minute.

The game came into life just before the break with both sides going close. Haseley’s 32nd minute diving header from Marcus Jackson’s cross was saved by goalkeeper Haydn Whitcombe, allowing captain Mark Benbow to tidy up in a move originally initiated by Haseley from midfield. Nathan Jackson then headed wide and Stourport’s Ryan Mahon turned well to fire at Paul Evans.

Halesowen went closer still in late first half pressure after 44 minutes when Grier played a neat one-two with Mark Smith and Smith’s shot was turned around the post by Whitcombe. When the resulting corner was not properly dealt with by the home defence, Smith’s header was cleared off the line by former Yeltz defender Dennis Pearce. A further Marcus Jackson effort was then saved low down by Whitcombe.

But the Swifts still had time for the closest first half chance when Gary Walker’s 45th minute corner was headed against the top inside of the post by Jamie Willets.

The Yeltz made a double substitution at the interval and took the lead just three minutes into the second half with a clinical strike when HASELEY controlled a cross from substitute Joseph Drake and beat two defenders to drill a low shot into the net from 15 yards.

Ben Haseley Celebrates

From then on, Halesowen posed little further threat up front as the hosts gradually battled back into the game. Pountney converted a 62nd minute cross from Kyonn Evans but had already been ruled offside and Calvin Dinsley fired at Evans three minutes later.

Stourport struck a deserved 71st minute equaliser when Benbow found Swifts’ man-of-the-match Tim Jackson and his left-wing cross was only partly cleared, allowing DINSLEY to tuck home into the bottom corner from ten yards.

With 75 minutes gone Grier’s left-wing free-kick was tipped over the Stourport bar by Whitcombe before the Swifts played out the last few minutes with ten men after former Yeltz forward Rory Curtis was dismissed for his second bookable offence following his challenge on Marcus Jackson.

The result finally confirmed mathematically the long inevitability that Stourport will finish bottom of the table.
