Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West – Saturday, 28th April 2012

Halesowen Town 0 Taunton Town 1

Halesowen ended a season of consolidation in the Evo-Stik League Southern Division One South and West with a mid-table 12th finishing place following a narrow home defeat at the hands of Taunton.

Spencer Blackham bundled the ball home for the Yeltz in the 3rd minute but was ruled offside and a 21st minute shot from Jean-Michel Gueyes drifted just wide. But flowing football proved difficult on a tricky playing surface in a game of few clearcut chances.

The Peacocks grabbed the solitary winning goal after 22 minutes when Raith Plant took advantage of a defensive slip and set up Rodney MARSH to finish crisply from 15 yards. Nathan Jackson limped out of the game midway through a first half before Ben Haseley worked clear in the 27th minute, only to find his route to goal blocked by goalkeeper Lee Matthews. Marsh then smashed just wide on the half-volley for Taunton at the end of the first half in which Halesowen proved to be second best.

At the start of the second period Halesowen goalkeeper and player of the season Paul Evans did well to touch a swirling corner from visiting captain Simon Ingram over the bar. Evans then turned the ball away from Graham Mercieca’s ball across goal in the 61st minute.

Haseley fired at goalkeeper Matthews in the 65th minute as another long ball forward failed to bear fruit. The visitors then survived a 71st minute goalmouth scramble with both Marcus Jackson and substitute Nathan Jones going close and a 74th minute header from Peter Folkes landed on top of the crossbar after Jones flicked on from a Marcus Jackson corner.

But Halesowen couldn’t find the reward of an equaliser and Evans came to the rescue with a fine 79th minute save to deny substitute Corey Lewis on the break, resulting in a corner. Lewis then broke clear in the 86th minute but Evans reacted quickly and raced out of goal to clear.

With three minutes remaining Haseley flashed a header just wide from Marcus Jackson’s free-kick and in the final minute of the campaign Haseley headed a loose ball just wide for the disappointed Yeltz.

The final whistle prompted a celebration by the Youth Team following the presentation of the trophy for winning the Midland Floodlit Youth League Central Division, ahead of the main end of season Presentation Evening in the Yeltz Bar.
