Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division - Saturday, 29th August 2015
Halesowen Town 2 Workington 0
Manager John Hill praised his team's hard work in bouncing back to winning ways with Greg Pearson and Isaac Cooper both scoring their first Halesowen goals, writes David Johnson.
Play commenced with Workington's Connor Tinnion striking a 3rd minute free-kick past the upright. But the Yeltz soon took the lead just 8 minutes into a determined performance when Jay Denny delivered a free-kick from the right and Joe Hull headed back across goal for PEARSON to turn and fire past goalkeeper Alex Mitchell from close range.
With their manager away on leave, the Reds forced an 11th minute corner after Kyle Morrison headed behind but Chris Westwood headed clear and goalkeeper Matt Sargeant collected after James Earl crossed the ball back in. Two further Workington corners in quick succession were cleared by Anthony Charles and Joe Hull. Scott Allison touched narrowly wide as Sargeant came out of goal from a long ball down the middle in the 24th minute and Sargeant then saved Allison's low shot five minutes later.
Jean-Michel Gueyes made a successful return to the Grove after signing from Solihull on Thursday and he made several important incisive runs from midfield to feed the forward line. Just before the interval Sargeant dived well to save at the feet of Allison.
At the start of the second period Philip McLuckie headed Jake Simpson's cross wide for the Reds. At the other end Mitchell caught Dean Waldron's header just under the bar and Waldron then fired high from 20 yards after an hour. The Reds exerted more pressure midway through the second half but couldn't find a way through the solid home defence. Anthony Wright blazed over the bar from Simpson's 62nd minute corner and Simpson's 64th minute cross just evaded Tinnion and substitute Matthew Tymon as they both raced in across goal.
Halesowen secured the points with a second goal in the 73rd minute through the perseverance of substitute Cooper after he pressurised Joshua Calvert down the left corner allowing COOPER to nip in and slot past Mitchell to benefit from Calvert's confusion with his own goalkeeper.
Halesowen blocked Alex Salmon's free-kick on the edge of the area after 79 minutes before the Yeltz created several further late chances to increase their lead. Waldron set up Denny to fire over the bar from 20 yards in the 88th minute and substitute Connor Collins went close in front of goal after good work from Gueyes a minute later. Cooper then went mightily close by launching an audacious 35 yard shot that beat Mitchell but his speculative effort rebounded back off the crossbar in the final minute.
