Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division - Saturday, 10th September 2016
Halesowen Town 3 Workington AFC 2
Leading scorer Kaiman Anderson struck another two goals to secure Halesowen's first home league win in a five-goal thriller, writes David Johnson.
In early play Workington's Joseph McGee shaved the cross-bar and Robert Wilson headed wide before the Yeltz found their stride to establish a two-goal half-time lead.
Halesowen's first goal after16 minutes owed much to fortune when goalkeeper Aaron Taylor only managed to slice the ball towards team-mate Sam Smith and his attempted clearance struck Anderson before looping into the empty net. The Reds were caught out again in the 25th minute when the instrumental midfielder Jordan Goddard stole the ball from Matthew Douglas and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Taylor in a one-on-one.
Although Matt Tinnion fired a free-kick against the Yeltz post, it was danger man Anderson who went close again twice after the break with Taylor on hand to save in the 61st minute after substitute Malcolm Melvin played a superb through ball.
But the Reds applied pressure and eventually pulled a goal back when Douglas powered a downwards header into the net from a 64th minute corner. Anderson then restored Halesowen's two goal advantage at 3-1 after 78 minutes with a neat finish for his second goal of the game after yet more good work from Goddard.
Workington set up a tense finish by reducing the arrears again at 3-2 in the 81st minute when Josh Calvert's 25-yard low shot evaded goalkeeper Platt. Goddard went close to a fourth Halesowen goal after 82 minutes before the Yeltz held firm through four minutes of injury time pressure.
