Evo-Stik League Northern Premier Division - Tuesday, 27th September 2016
Halesowen Town 2 Ilkeston FC 1
Two more goals from leading striker Kaiman Anderson extended Halesowen's unbeaten run to six games after a hard-working performance, writes David Johnson.
Ilkeston arrived at the Grove as the basement side - albeit due to still being in catch up mode - but started brightly as Anthony Dwyer flicked a header just wide from Mark Shelton's 6th minute corner and Ben Morris's 8th minute cross from the right was cut out by the home defence. Yeltz goalkeeper Dan Platt then kept out Anton Brown's powerful header with a superb reflex save after parrying an initial shot from the right in the 16th minute.
As Halesowen gradually gained the upper hand, a dangerous right wing cross from Kyle Haynes was tipped onto the top of the post by goalkeeper Ross Durrant in the 17th minute and Anderson was denied by Luke Foster's block in front of goal in the 22nd minute. Ilkeston captain Matt Baker was booked in the 27th minute for bringing down Anderson on the edge of the penalty area after a good run against the heart of the Ilkeston defence, but Lee Chilton could only strike the set piece against the defensive wall.
The Yeltz took a 33rd minute lead when ANDERSON followed up to nod home after Malcolm Melvin headed Chilton's deep left-wing cross against the underside of the cross bar. Anderson continued to pose problems after the interval and he fired just wide with a 50th minute low shot from 25 yards and was then blocked by Foster after skipping past three defenders in another incisive run five minutes later. For the Robins, Shelton curled a direct free-kick just past the post from the edge of the area after an hour and stabbed another effort wide five minutes later.
But Halesowen kept up the momentum and doubled their lead in the 71st minute after Kennedy Digie intercepted in midfield and he drove forward before releasing ANDERSON to curl just inside the top corner in a one-on-one with goalkeeper Durrant.
Shortly afterwards, Platt kept out Ilkeston substitute Dexter Atkinson just inside the post after 73 minutes and opposite goalkeeper Durrant made a good blocking save when Chilton cut in from the left in the 75th minute.  The Robins set up a tense final few seconds after DWYER headed home a consolation goal at the far post in the sixth minute of injury time from Rory Coleman's free-kick, but Halesowen deservedly banked all three points.
